Ruth Stephenson-Ward, Royal District Nursing Society
Wanting to get out into the community and make a difference to people’s lives, Ruth joined the RDNS ten years ago.
“For me, the most enjoyable part of my job is knowing that I’m making a difference to someone’s life. Sometimes the district nurse is the only person that some one might see in the day. It makes my role then very special and important.”
Ruth is responsible for implementing the “Breathing Space” fund in the community. The fund gives financial assistance for RDNS clients in need. It might involve paying their electricity bill, buying some food, fixing a washing machine etc. It also provides glucose monitors and medications to patients who are unable to buy them themselves.
“It’s a once off helping hand but it can make a big difference to a person’s comfort and happiness.”
