Antonietta Pollifrone, Stirling Fruit Mart
Antonietta’s parents were market gardeners and it’s the only job she has ever done. She has been working at the Stirling Fruit Mart for the past 21 years.
She loves all things fruit and veg – “I love growing them, eating them and of course selling them,” she laughs. If she had to choose a favourite it would probably be cherries or mangoes, although she thinks they are all delicious.
Antonietta came to Australia when she was six years old. She spoke no English and yet still managed to top her class a year later at Uraidla Primary School. She loved learning but unfortunately had to leave school at the end of grade 7 to help her family work the land.
“I have no regrets,” she says. “To me, family is the most important and I can’t wait for the day I become a grandmother!” Now semi-retired, Antonietta spends her spare time collecting stamps, coins and teaspoons. “I hope to get them all sorted out when I fully retire.”
