Fulfilling her dream of always wanting a book shop in the hills, Nynke opened Matilda Bookshop 25 years ago. Although enjoying all genres, her great love is fiction. “This is where I can help people the most. The best part of my job is choosing books for my customers that are going to be an enjoyable reading experience for them. People want to know that they aren’t going to be wasting their money on a bad book.”

Being an independent book shop helps Nynke develop a more intimate relationship with her customers. “I can tune into their tastes, buying books that I know will be welcomed. Every independent book shop survives and trades on the choice of its books.”
Apart from being an avid reader herself, Nynke sings in the Adelaide University Choral Society. “We sing major choral works; it’s a great joy for me. Mind you, I also like rock and roll!”
